Head of Primary Message Week 24

Building on Strong Foundations 💪

At ISB, everything we do in Primary is built upon the firm foundations set within Early Years. Students who join us at just two years old receive the very best start to their learning journey, ensuring they are well-prepared for Reception and beyond. Our ethos is centred on developing deep conceptual understanding, which is only possible when we continuously build upon prior knowledge.

We have a strong understanding of how the human brain works and how children learn best. That’s why our curriculum is carefully structured to stretch and challenge each child, ensuring meaningful progress at every stage. We regularly review and refine our approach to provide the best possible education, and we share our full curriculum objectives for each year group on the Primary Newsfeed. We value a strong partnership between home and school, as we know that working together makes a significant impact on student success.

One example of this carefully planned progression can be seen in our approach to overnight experiences. These are designed as a gradual and structured journey, allowing students to develop confidence and independence over time:

✅ Year 3 – One-night sleepover at school

✅ Year 4 – Sleepover at our Seria campus

✅ Year 5 – Local residential in Temburong

✅ Year 6 – A brand-new international travel experience

This deliberate, step-by-step approach ensures that by the time students reach Year 6, they are ready for new challenges and experiences beyond Brunei. Just as in the classroom, our residential programme reflects our commitment to a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds resilience, independence, and a love for learning.

We know that our students in Primary attain well, and we have the data to support this. We use a series of external measures to track progress and ensure that every child is meeting their full potential. Based on performance in external assessments, standardised against more than 16,000 UK-based students, our results demonstrate that ISB students consistently achieve strong outcomes. These assessments provide valuable insights into student progress, allowing us to refine our curriculum and teaching approaches to ensure that all learners are stretched, challenged, and supported at the right level. By combining our deep understanding of how children learn with rigorous external benchmarking, we maintain high expectations and a commitment to excellence in every aspect of our Primary provision.

For more insights into how we shape learning at ISB, we encourage you to explore our Primary Newsfeed, where we regularly publish details about curriculum progression:

If you have any questions about any aspect of school life, please do not hesitate to message in Seesaw.
