Our expected standard for multiplication tables is that students can answer questions up to 12x12 in less than 6 seconds per question by the end of Yr4. This means students require an average studio speed of less than 6 seconds: Breakthrough Artist or above in TT Rock Stars. What is your child's Rock Status?
Each student (Yr3 - Yr6) will receive their own Heat Map in Seesaw. The colours indicate the average speed when answering each multiplication question in TT Rock Stars. Every Heat Map is different. Please use yours to help increase your child's speed in targeted areas.
Why are times tables so important?
Knowing the times tables (and their associated division facts) supports mathematical learning and understanding. Students who have a strong grasp of times tables tend to be more self-assured when learning new concepts.
Imagine you were asked you to solve the following problem in your head:
Jack has 56 chocolates. He wants to share these chocolates between himself and seven friends. How many chocolates does each individual get?
To solve this problem, you need to add 1 to 7 and obtain 8 and then divide 56 by 8. If you know that 7 × 8 = 56 then you do not need to devote any working memory resources to working out this division.
Why do we use TT Rock Stars?
Assessment of attainment is important, and there are no short cuts to learning your times tables. We use TT Rock Stars as our assessment tool as it has the capability to measure progress over time and also provides an accurate snapshot of current attainment. Rather than high-stakes, one-off assessments in school, regular use of TT Rock Stars enables us to report to parents with an accurate measurement of success in this key curriculum area.
Maths at home
Supporting your child with Maths at home can be tricky. Parents need to know that the work they do with their children will directly support the provision in school. There is a place for Home Learning, but only if it will have a positive impact on outcomes. If you would like to build upon the learning in school, we recommend these three apps. All are simple to use and can be used little and often to build upon prior knowledge.
NumBots
Addition & Subtraction. Solved.
NumBots is an online game and playing little and often will significantly improve your child’s recall and understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts. These are critical foundations in Maths so we are excited by the impact NumBots will have.
1 Minute Maths
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division.
The 1-Minute Maths app helps your child to build greater number confidence and fluency. It’s all about targeted practice in engaging, one-minute chunks!
Times Tables Rock Stars
Multiplication & Division.
At ISB, we are on a mission. It is our aspiration that every student knows and is able to recall their multiplication tables to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4. There is no short cut to learning multiplication and division facts. Without a solid knowledge, students will struggle in all areas of the Maths curriculum at ISB.
